Improv performance is about working with others to build meaningful, fun, and hilarious shows, and this fall Big Blue Door performances are taking some bold new steps! Well be offering a wonderful Improv 4: Team Performance that will present a show called Dear Diary, and instead of a second Improv 4, for the first time ever we’ll be offering Improv 5: Show Making!
Improv 5 is for experienced improvisers who are comfortable with basic agreement in two-person scenes, able to create and maintain strong character POVs, and have performed in multiple Improv 4 runs. In this course we want to dig in and explore a particular type of show and how to create vulnerability and suspense onstage!
For our first-ever Improv 5 we couldn’t imagine a better form than what we call the Nambrod! Inspired by a 2015 set devised by Big Blue Door veterans Nauder Namaky and Brian Weisbrod we’ve evolved this flexible and fascinating form for our Administration sets ever since. The Nambrod creates an improvised radio or podcast that becomes a source scene for exploring points of view, emotions, unusual language, and interesting details. It can work well for short or longer sets and groups of different sizes.
Improv 5: The Nambrod will meet on Sunday evenings. It will anchor our First Friday shows, perform at Vinegar Hill, and perform at the Magnet Theater in New York City on October 10th.
If you can’t make the NYC show, don’t sweat it; we still want you in the course! However, if you will miss multiple non-NYC shows or multiple rehearsals, please hold off. The Improv 4 set this fall isn’t as dependent on team commitment so that would be a better fit.

Also students will be asked to do a little homework! Listen or watch some podcasts and radio shows and bring in characters and relationships!
