Improv 4: Team Performance is about working with others to build exciting, meaningful, and hilarious shows, and this fall Big Blue Door will be exploring two very different forms modeled and molded on the strengths and interests of the two performing groups. Forms may evolve and change once rehearsals begin, but here are two forms I’d like to start with:
The Tuesday group would begin working on the “Living Room.” We’ve often used the Living Room as an opening for our improv sets, but here we will expand it to create an organic improv form in which 5-7 performers share true stories, spin out scenes, and return for more stories, eventually building to a shared group mind and universe! We did a version of this impromptu in the Tornado Show this summer. The Living Room group will host the show in Belmont House!
The Thursday group would begin with work on what I call the “Hive” or a “Group Harold.” In this form 5-8 performers follow the mechanics of the Harold but initiating group games where the harold expects two-person scenes, and two-person scenes where the harold would anticipate a group game. So group #1, group #2, group #3, two-person, group #1, group #2, group #3, two-person, and finally group #1, group #2, and group #3 mixing and matching. This form explores strong, abstract physicality and intense matching energy. We used a version of this as an exercise in several of the summer rehearsals.
Important Attendance Note: Both these forms require more focused group work and trust than the Harold, so if the madness of fall scheduling means you already know you’ll miss or be late to more than 2 practice and show dates, then please skip this run. We will have another Harold Run this winter, which you could rejoin. If you don’t want to wait that long for improv–and we don’t want you gone for that long–you are welcome to sign up for Improv I or Improv 3 for the same price. Also I will try to set up a late-fall pick-up show, like the summer show, with only one rehearsal that you could all come to! Just let me know your situation!
Important Venue Note: The Belmont House is at the lovely home of veteran improviser Lisa Ryan, a perfect match for the Living Room form! The Belmont Arts Collaborative show hasn’t been confirmed yet, but I didn’t want to wait any longer to get the signups out. We might end up somewhere else!
