We’ll break down videos of comedy sketches to see how they’re structured, how counter-patterns called “games” drive humor, and how the setting, characters, and situation work with the games. Students will learn techniques for developing their own characters and games, brainstorm situations to accentuate the humor, and construct the “beats” that create rising energy and interest. We’ll even discuss how these techniques are used for comedy scenes and characters in plays, movies, and sitcoms.
Sound technical? It isn’t! This is a workshop for anyone interested in what makes something funny, whether current or aspiring comics, screenwriters, playwrights, fiction writers, videographers, filmmakers, directors, improvisers, and actors or fans of television shows who are curious about how they work. No writing experience necessary!
