Join Big Blue Door starting this October for Middle School Improv course! Saturday afternoons 1-3pm starting September 13th, Middle School Improv will feature 7 sessions of real longform improv comedy training for 6th, 7th, & 8th graders!
“Longform” means the comedy develops out of the scenes themselves with students free to draw on their own real conversations, observations, and experiences. And middle school kids have plenty of those! The course will get kids moving in mind and body with cooperative games, imaginative exercises, and lots of laughter to culminate in a group-created, completely-improvised class performance!
The program is structured to give kids two hours a week free of cliques, castes, or social coercion so students can study the most joyous parts of theater and performance: imagination and creation. Instead of competition and stress, vying for parts or learning lines–-with all the challenging social dynamics and criticisms–-improv gives middle-schoolers the amazing experience of being fully themselves while working with other kids who are fully themselves. Students learn to turn ideas and emotions, opinions and reactions into funny, lively scenes and characters!
Middle School Improv is a stand-alone course, but graduates are welcome to go on to Middle School Improv 2. (Our current MSI-2 kids will be performing at the Magnet Theater in New York City on October 10th!)
