Join Big Blue Door for Middle School Improv Comedy! It’s real improv comedy training for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders! This is “long form” improv comedy meaning students learn to create extended scenes in which the comedy develops out of the characters, location, and situation. Students are free to draw on their own real complaints, conversations, observations, and experiences. The course will get kids moving in mind and body with cooperative games, imaginative exercises, and lots of laughter to culminate in a group-created, completely-improvised class performance that will amaze family and friends!
Saturday afternoons 2-4pm starting February 1st, Middle School Improv will feature 7 sessions plus a winter weather make-up session. The final session includes a class show.
Big Blue Door’s middle-school improv program is structured to give kids two hours a week free of cliques, castes, and social coercion so students can explore the most joyous parts of theater and performance–imagination and creation. Instead of competition and stress, vying for parts or learning lines–with all the challenging social dynamics and criticisms–improv gives middle-schoolers the experience of being fully themselves while working with other kids who are fully themselves, turning ideas and emotions, opinions and reactions into funny, lively scenes and characters! Improv builds confidence and humor that transfers to all types of performance from public speaking to acting in plays to team sports. Plus experiencing from the inside how scenes and performances actually work demystifies the entertainment world in a healthy way.
