Scene Sketch Scenario starts 4/16!

sss Explore the art of comedy writing with this 6-session introduction into creating comic sketches, short comic plays, and comic scenes in longer works! For the first time ever Big Blue Door is expanding our sketch comedy intensive into six glorious weeks of fun! This course is for writers who want to get funnier, comedians who want to develop their material, or absolutely anyone who wants to see how funny scenes are constructed! No writing experience necessary! Taught by Big Blue Door co-founder Joel Jones!

The first two weeks will introduce students into the basic development of patterns and counter-patterns that create funny scenes. Over the middle two sessions, students will create a rough portfolio of sketch, play, and scene outlines and ideas with passages of dialog and interesting characters. Each student should come away with about five roughed-out scenes, sketches, or plays including a short play set in a bar, a radio script, and a script for a video or a stage. Over the final two sessions students will develop one script into a finished work!

The course will use guided examples, quick-fire exercises, a writers-room atmosphere, and specific homework assignments to learn how to pull comic ideas from the world around them and in their own peeves and reactions, how to map premises into patterns, and how to turn patterns into scenes. There will be weekly homework assignments including some reading and writing. Students should expect 90 minutes outside of class per week. To give everyone time to read material this class is limited to seven students!
