September means the lazy heat of summer gives way to the crisp winds of fall, the verdant colors appear in the mountain heights, the football game traffic resumes, and Big Blue Door launches a brand new season! It’s our fifth season, for those keeping track!
First up is First Friday Improv. McGuffey Art Center officially opens new art shows on First Fridays with free paintings, sculpture, wine and cheese at 201 Second Street at the corner of Market Street downtown. Come for the art and stay for Big Blue Door’s show upstairs. 7pm. $5 cash. Big Blue Door’s improv teachers and coaches Brian Weisbrod, Nauder Namaky, and Joel Jones practice what they preach, performing as The Administration.
Graduates of Big Blue Door’s three-course longform improv program (Charlottesville’s only genuine longform improv training program) form groups that rehearse and perform runs of shows. This fall we have two groups, one coached by Nauder Namaky and one coached by Brian Weisbrod. Both groups are currently full but if you’re a graduate of Big Blue Door courses and want to join, email firstname.lastname@example.org to join the waiting list!
Big Blue Door longform improv training begins with the most fun you might ever have in a class, Improv I: Character & Scene. You don’t have to be an actor or comic; it’s a class for anyone who wants to explore the fun of comedy. Graduates can go on to other levels, but Improv I is a great stand-alone course too. Meeting on Sundays 4-6pm starting September 11th. And we offer tremendous discounts for local students and teachers.
Improv 3: The Harold is the culmination of Big Blue Door’s improv program. Graduates are eligible for joining our performance groups. Improv 3 explores group games and group openings. Currently this course is sold out, but email email@example.com for our waiting list.
The third Thursday of every month is Big Blue Door Improv Night at Cville Coffee featuring an ever-changing roster of longform groups and styles. September’s Improv Night will be the final scheduled performance of improv trio, The Administration.
Also in September, Big Blue Door will announce our full fall performance schedule, other classes and workshops, and more about our performance ensembles!
