The Echo Lineup

echo 3 copyThe Echo uses fragments of speech overheard recently by audience members–opinions, accusations, confessions, and advice–to create cascades of characters, scenes, and stories. Patterns of speech duplicate, multiply, and scatter, and perhaps connect with one another before the set is done.

shawn hirabayashi Shawn Hirabayashi grew up a foreign service brat and moved to Charlottesville four years ago. Shawn is a playwright who practices t’ai chi and once had sex on top the tallest building in Kinshasa (Capitol of the Congo)! In addition to improvising (Hot Dog Water, Sleepover) Shawn is a past winner of the Big Blue Door Jam, Big Blue Door’s true stories show.

Nauder Nauder Namaky came to Charlottesville by way of Austin, TX. He’s performed with Big Blue Door improv groups since 2013, including OK Stupid, Lady Pills, Unusual Suspects, Placeholders, Plan A, Dance Monkey, and Sleepover. By day he is the Project Coordinator for UVa’s Program for Anxiety, Cognition, and Treatment.

Kirk Kirk Martini grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and moved to Charlottesville in 1992 to teach in UVa’s architecture department. Kirk is a swing dancer and yoga-ist. (Yes, we just made that a word!) Past Big Blue Door ensembles include Unusual Suspects, Placeholders, Mogli Mogli de Brogli, Catawampus, and Sleepover.

finn mehigan Ripped from the comfort of NOVA Finn Mehigan now studies classics at our prestigious local U from NOVA. He’s been improvising with Big Blue Door since the fall of 2014. Candor dat viribus alas. Past ensembles include Dance Monkey and Sleepover.

larry Larry Goldstein grew up in the suburbs of NY and DC and came here for grad school in theater. He was part of Big Blue Door in its first season. He was a member of Big Blue Door’s first improv troupe, Lady Pills, as well as numerous ensembles with Big Blue Door, Live Arts, and is a longtime devotee of Playback Theater. He teaches drama at Tandem. Also he’s good at arithmetic.

deborah Debby Prum is a transplanted New England native, banjoist, and fiction writer who took up improv in Big Blue Door’s second year after being prodded relentlessly by a friend. She was on Big Blue Door’s first improv ensemble, Lady Pills, and many since! She writes short stories, movie and book reviews, essays that air on NPR stations and in newspapers and magazines, and writes histories for young adults. She also teaches workshops on the craft of writing. Check out her latest doings on her blog.

deborah arenstein Deborah Arenstein was born in Rock Hill, SC, lived in Petersburg and Richmond most of her life, and moved to Charlottesville in 2006. She was an extra in the movie Jungle Fever, acted in Richmond theater productions, and once had a farm with chickens, goats, and mini-donkeys.
