The third Thursday of every month is Improv Night at C’ville Coffee with an ever-evolving roster of Charlottesville’s only longform improv comedy! For February, Improv Night featured Big Blue Door’s winter performance ensembles showcasing forms called The Helix and Sleepover.
The Helix creates a longform set from audience suggestions of places. Will May, Deborah Arenstein, Debby Prum, John Lawrence, Jason Megill, and Max Hoecker presented scenes from audience suggestions of a fruit stand, a confessional booth next to it, a police station down the block, and a library across town! We met a comic array of single parents, suspicious cops, lovelorn confessees, and shy library guests who give librarians their own books as gifts!
The Sleepover creates a longform set from characters developed out of a unique ‘scultpure-garden’ of improvisers. Finn Mehigan, Nauder Namaky, Brian Weisbrod, Shawn Hirabayashi, Kirk Martini, Erik Swanson, and JP Riggle created characters from the audience member’s suggestion of advice they’ve heard recentl: “Avoid animal fat.” We traveled to a town in Michigan to meet an Armenian grandfather, his assimilated grandson, the grandson’s lover, the grandfather’s bus stop friend, and a hard-drinking bank staff!
