Actually, we’re not totally back. Fall shows and classes don’t start for a few weeks, but it’s time to preview our upcoming season and give you a chance to mark your calendars!

September 2014 means the Big Blue Door Jam returns! Charlottesville’s true stories show presents an amazing monthly array of the funny, the moving, and the bizarre!

Want to tell a story at a Big Blue Door Jam? We’d love for you to! In fact, that’s why we have a show.

  • First, come to a Jam, if you haven’t already, so you know how it works.
  • Second, email shows@bigbluedoor.org and write “Sept Jam” or “Nov Jam” or whatever the month is in your subject line (so we can easily keep track of who is doing what), and in the email include 1-3 sentence bio, a photo (if you don’t use facebook or have a facebook photo that is recognizable), and a 1-3 sentence summary of your story.

Kinda Late Show

Big Blue Door’s Kinda Late Show returns in September! It’s a 9pm show featuring longform improv by graduates of Big Blue Door’s improv training program, and for the first time ever the Kinda Late Show will be at McGuffey Art Center! Details soon!

IMPROV I: Character & Scene
Sundays 7-9:30pm at McGuffey Art Center
Starts September 14th!

This is Big Blue Door‘s famous introduction to longform improv, and this season we’ll be teaching it in the McGuffey Arts Center. Eight weeks of exercises, games, and a final class performance. Whether you’re an experienced performer looking to broaden your skills or an absolute newcomer looking to have fun this is the class that everyone on the planet should take! (Max 12 students)

IMPROV III: The Harold
Sundays 4-6pm at McGuffey Art Center
Starts September 21st!

Our culmination of Big Blue Door‘s longform improv training for students who have completed Improv 1 & 2! This class explores group games, group openings, and ‘third beats’ as students learn to perform the Harold, the original and most popular longform structure. Eight sessions plus a class show.

SKETCH WORKSHOP
Saturday, Sept 20th 9am-1pm
Writer House

Big Blue Door co-director Joel Jones is teaching a fast-and-furious one-day workshop in Sketch Writing over with friends at Writer House. This quick workshop will introduce the patterns and counter-patterns which contemporary comedy writers call ‘game’ and give you a sense of how these games are used to construct hilarious scenes and scenarios.

By the way, before we even make it to September, it’s too late to sign up for our summer- session Telling True Stories class at Champion Tutoring in Ivy Square, plus it sold out, but you can still come to the FREE class showcase on Monday, 8pm August 25th at Champion. We’ll post more on that soon!
