Joel is teaching a one-day workshop at Writer House on July 28 on Writing Sketch Comedy.
This seminar will look at some classic sketches from Vaudeville, Monty Python, and more recent sketch shows to illustrate how the patterns of a scene and the counter-patterns (called “game” by comedy writers) build laughs. These techniques can be used for stand-alone sketches or as scenes in longer works.
In-class exercises will show students methods of creating funny characters, developing them, and placing them in funny situations–all in a ‘writer’s room’ atmosphere!
